Responsible AI-Audit

Certifying the responsible use of AI in journalism.

More and more publications are using artificial intelligence for research, translation and image editing, for example. WEMF offers an independent audit process – the Responsible AI audit – to ensure that you as a reader, viewer or listener can continue to place your trust in media content. This entails media companies having their use of AI reviewed by independent experts, with the aim of upholding and highlighting responsible standards.

What does this mean for you?

Clear rules

The media company has clear rules for the use of AI and provides contact details for people who can be contacted with questions and complaints.

Greater transparency

You gain a sound understanding of when and how AI is used, for example, via the clear labelling of wholly AI-generated posts.

Reliable journalism

Regardless of whether AI is involved or not, humans retain editorial responsibility and work according to journalistic quality principles.

Trained employees

Journalists and all other employees who work with AI receive clear guidelines and ongoing training.

Ongoing quality control

The media company undertakes to continuously optimise and monitor its use of AI in order to ensure trustworthy content.

What exactly happens during the audit?

As part of the audit, a media company must disclose all internal guidelines, regulations, standards and workflows to the auditors and show how they ensure that AI is used responsibly.

In particular, the audit examines:

  1. Transparency: how a media company provides information about the use of AI and labels AI content.
  2. Human checks: whether humans make all the key editorial decisions and regularly review AI results or AI systems.
  3. Rules and responsibilities: existence and implementation of a binding AI ethics policy.
  4. Employee training: how well journalists are informed about the opportunities and risks of AI and, in particular, about internal rules.
  5. Copyright and rights of use: whether content and data are used correctly and legally.
  6. Data protection and data security: whether user data is protected and processed responsibly.
  7. Risk management: how possible errors, distortions or problems with AI systems are detected and remedied.
Who carries out the audit?

The experts at WEMF review all written rules and specifications integrated into workflows to determine whether their content is fully appropriate to ensure the responsible use of AI. In addition, WEMF also conducts in-person discussions with managers, journalists and experts to check whether they are aware of the existing rules and procedures, and whether they implement them in their day-to-day work.

What is not part of the Responsible AI audit?

WEMF reviews the overarching conditions and processes. However, it does not evaluate the quality of the journalistic content or the results of the use of AI. Similarly, it does not monitor or check on a case-by-case basis whether AI was used responsibly (or not) in a particular media article, or whether its use was correctly declared: the media company itself is solely responsible for this.
